Realistic skull with fiery eye socket

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A cracked, grey skull fills the frame, with a small building silhouetted inside a glowing orange eye socket and flames rising behind the teeth. The shading is highly detailed and photographic, with smooth gradients on the bone and warm orange and red highlights against darker surroundings. The skull is centred and fills most of the image, with the curve of the limb visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learned the harbour by its smoke before you learned its names. On the morning the net came up heavy off Kestle Point, the men swore it was weed, then a rock, then the skull that rolled out of the mesh and knocked against the bilge boards like a dropped bucket. Old Enid Parry crossed herself and said nothing, which in Porthwen meant she knew which house it had come from.

That house stood on the cliff above the slipway, the one with the blue shutters that nobody had lived in since the winter the tide came over the wall. Its beams had burned for two nights while you watched from the quay with a flask of tea going cold in your hand. Now the skull sat on the bench in the net loft, and when you held a lamp to its eye socket there was the house again, small and black and roofed in flame, as if someone had folded it up and tucked it inside the bone.

Enid told you it was the chandler's wife, who went back for the ledger and never came out. Maybe. The sea gives back what it likes. You stopped going into the loft after dusk, but the glow kept appearing on the sill of your own window, orange at the rim, pulsing the way a fire does when it is feeding.

In the end you rowed it out past the breakwater on the ebb and let it go with a stone wedged in its jaw. The next night the blue shutters glowed on the cliff, lit from inside, and you stood on the slip with your hands in your pockets and understood that it had only ever been moving house.
