Skull and roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic skull with decorative swirling patterns across its forehead and a small gem-like detail sits at the centre of the design. Red roses wrap around the skull at the top and bottom, with soft blue, teal and orange shading behind them. The tattoo fills the frame on a forearm against a dark background.

Dear Tom,

Mr Pargeter finally shifted the last of the stock from the back room on Tuesday, and I was there with my ledger when the crate came open. Inside, wrapped in a page of the Hebden Courier, was a skull no bigger than a clenched fist, carved from pale wood and painted over with curls of gold so fine you could not catch them with a fingernail. He says it came off a boat from Veracruz before the war and has been waiting for someone with steady hands to sell it to.

I told him I had no use for a grinning thing in a town where the chapel already frowns at paint on a Sunday. Still, I could not stop looking at the little blue stone set in its brow, which caught the lamp the way the weir does in April. Mrs Ostle sent her girl round for three red roses from the back wall of the hall, and I pressed one into the ledger while I talked, so the whole counter smelled of summer and old paper.

When I got home I found I had been drawing the thing on the back of the rent book, roses crowding its jaw and the swirls running up over the brow like smoke off a chimney. The drawing is folded inside this letter. Keep it, since you always said I had nothing better to do than sketch.

Come home at Whitsun. The roses will be out and the skull will still be on the shelf, unsold, grinning at the both of us over the till.
