Floating astronaut in a spacesuit drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A pen and ink drawing of an astronaut in a bulky spacesuit, shown mid-air with arms and legs spread and the helmet visor reflecting light. The linework is dense and detailed, using fine hatching and stippled shading across the helmet, suit folds, straps and gloves. The drawing is monochrome on cream paper and the figure fills the frame against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ring was in the left cuff of a spacesuit, and the spacesuit was swinging from the rafters of Pemberton Village Hall at twenty past two. Uncle Ned had hung it there himself on fishing line, arms out like a man who had just stepped off a ladder into nothing. "Gravity's a habit," he'd said over breakfast, "and weddings are the time to break habits."

I climbed the stepladder with the best man's pint still in one hand. The helmet caught the light from the high windows, and I could see my own face in the visor, flushed and a bit daft, a guest in a borrowed tie. Inside the glove the ring was cold and heavier than I expected, which I think is true of most rings.

Ned had trained for a flight that never happened. He told the story to anyone who would hold still: the simulator in the Lincolnshire hangar, the suit that weighed more than his wife's car, and the afternoon the programme was cancelled by a letter with a crest on it. He never complained. He just kept the suit folded in tissue paper at the back of his wardrobe for forty years, and he brought it along to the hall like a man bringing his oldest friend.

When I climbed down, Mags was waiting by the urn with her veil pushed back, and she didn't ask about the ring. She said, "You found it," then raised her voice for the whole room. "Ned, get down here, we're doing this properly." He came down slowly, hand over hand along the line, and everyone clapped as though it had been planned all along. Maybe it had. The ring slid onto her finger with a small click I still hear when the hall goes quiet.
