Sewing tools and roses line design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a coiled measuring tape at the top, with roses and leaves beneath it, followed by a pair of scissors, a needle and a spool of thread lower down. The linework is fine and uses hatching and shading to suggest the coils of tape and the texture of the thread. The whole design is rendered in a single blue ink on a plain pale background.

The hem was already pinned when Mrs Okonedo rang the bell, so Ada had to unpick three rows of her own work before she could start. Her mother had taught her that a seam tells you who sewed it, and she was not going to let the Hartley girl's wedding go out with a crooked line from the shop that had raised her.

The roses came from the florist across the road, who owed her for two summers of mended curtains. Ada laid them on the counter beside the spools and the good shears, the ones with the bent handle that only she could cut with, and watched the tape coil back into its tin with a sound like someone breathing out.
Old Mr Hartley came in at four to collect the dress himself. He did not want it, he said. He wanted to know who had taken in the waist. Ada told him it was her mother's stitch, the one with the double back-tack that nobody used any more, and he nodded and paid in coins, counting them onto the glass one at a time.
When the shop emptied she wound the last length of thread onto its spool and wrote the date on the cardboard, the way her mother had. Underneath it she wrote the girl's name, so the next person who unwound it would know whose hands had been there.
