Dad counted the rooks off the Bramley trees every evening in August, and every evening he got to five and gave up. "They're never still long enough," he said, wiping cider-sticky fingers on his trousers. I thought he was joking until the year the orchard was sold and the new man strung netting over every row.

The netting caught nothing but leaves. What came instead were the little flocks of finches that dropped out of the hedge in a rush, five or six at a time, and wheeled over the Worcester tree as if they had agreed on the turn before anyone else could see it coming. I kept a tally in the back of my school exercise book. Five birds, I wrote, always five, though I never once saw the same five twice.

On the last Saturday of the month I climbed the ladder to the top of the old ash by the gate, where the wind comes off the Medway, and waited. Below me the picking crew were loading crates onto the flatbed. The sun was low and the light came in sideways through the leaves, and for a minute the whole valley looked like a photograph left out too long in the window. Then they went up together, five dark shapes peeling off the sky, and I understood that my father had never been counting birds at all. He had been counting the people who would still be standing in the orchard when they left.
