Feather dissolving into birds on upper chest
Chest · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a solid black feather on the upper chest, with its quill pointing towards the shoulder. Small black bird silhouettes spread from the feather's tip and rise towards the shoulder, and a single small teal mark sits among them. The bare skin and dark background keep the focus on the design, which is shown in a soft, evenly lit photograph.

Ask the fishwives what a feather is worth on Yell and they will tell you nothing, because they have never had to pay for one. Mairi Sinclair paid for hers. It was the last grey goose feather in the parish, plucked from the roof of the ruined kirk where the geese nested, and she carried it down to the pier in her apron pocket on the morning her brother's boat did not come in.

The men said the sea had him. Mairi said nothing. She sat on the sea wall with the quill between finger and thumb and watched the starlings lift off the byre roof. They rose in a rough knot, then broke apart and wheeled out over the water toward Unst, thinning as they went, until the last few were nothing but specks, like pepper flicked off a spoon.
Her grandmother had a saying for that: a feather goes where the wind wants it, and the wind wants everything. So Mairi walked to the end of the pier, where the teal buoy knocked against the stones. She tied a strand of red wool round its shaft, the way her brother always marked his creels, and she let the quill go.
The feather did not fall. It turned over once, shed its barbs into a dozen dark shapes, and those shapes climbed the air after the starlings as if they had only been waiting all winter to be called. Mairi went home with an empty apron. Next morning a boat with a red thread at its bow came in on the tide, and the man at the tiller lifted one hand to the gulls and to her, and did not shout.
