Floral cat silhouette on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A sitting cat silhouette is filled with pink, peach and green flowers and leaves on a dark navy background. The petals and foliage are rendered in solid colour with soft shading, and the outline of the cat is defined by the navy field. The cat sits centrally on the back of the leg, with the flowers spreading across its body and tail.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo had given Ruth three weeks to paint the shopfront, and by the third Thursday the navy was still tacky at the edges where the rain had got under the tarpaulin. Ruth stood on the stepladder with a fine brush in her teeth, trying to remember what her tutor had said about cats. Sit them down first, he'd said, then fill them with whatever you're too frightened to paint plain.

She had filled this one with peonies. Pink ones, the blowsy kind that drop petals on the pavement, and peach roses with their edges curled like paper, and green leaves she kept mixing too bright and then knocking back with a dab of umber. The cat sat with its tail wrapped round its feet, looking out across Chapel Street as if it had been waiting for a bus. Mrs Okonedo's late husband had kept a grey tom called Biscuit who sat in the window of the old dressmaker's for nineteen years, and nobody on the street had forgotten him.

On the last afternoon a boy from the primary school stopped with his mum and pointed at the cat's ears. "It's got flowers inside it," he said, as though he'd caught the painter out. Ruth said that was the idea. He asked if the flowers were real. She told him they'd be real for as long as the paint lasted, which was longer than most things on the street.

Mrs Okonedo came out with two mugs of tea, looked up for a long time, and said nothing at all. Then she handed Ruth a mug, took the other one herself, and sat down on the step beneath the cat, which was the closest thing to a yes Ruth had ever been given.
