Pink flower with watercolour splashes on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A large pink flower, resembling a chrysanthemum or dahlia, sits on the outer ankle with soft petal shading and an orange centre. Blue, teal and purple watercolour-style washes spread behind it, with a small black ink splash at the upper edge. The photo shows the leg against a brick wall and a paved ground, with white sandals in the frame.

Mam painted the chrysanthemum onto the tin kettle the spring the Ouse flooded the lower lock, and she never once told me why it had to be that flower. I was nine, sat on the cabin step with my knees under my chin, watching her dip a size-two brush into ink she'd mixed from soot and rainwater. The river that week was the colour of weak tea, and she said the best paint for a wet day was the one that ran.

She taught me to lay the wash first. Wet the paper, drop the blue, and let it spread on its own. The purple went in where the current pulled hardest, the teal where the reeds leaned over. The flower came last, petal by petal with a dry brush so the pink kept its edges. "Colour does the hard bit," she said. "You only have to stop before you ruin it."
The boat went down that November, not in the flood but from a bolt that rusted through under Staunton Bridge. We got the cabin up on the bank with rope and two borrowed lorries, and the kettle came through it dented but whole. Mam set it on the stove in the rented flat that first night and boiled water in it without a word.
Years later I found a black speck on the lid, flicked where her hand had jerked when the hull lurched. I thought about scrubbing it off. Instead I left it, because it was the one part of that painting she hadn't planned, and I have come to think the flower was never the point. It was only the place where the water had to go around it.
