Peony tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of peony flowers in black and grey ink runs up the forearm, with several overlapping blooms, petals drawn in fine outlines and leaves visible at the left edge. The shading is soft and light, with darker tones at the flower centres and petal edges. The arm is held across the body in front of a weathered wooden fence, with gold bracelets and a gold digital watch in view.

The peonies came off the lorry in the dark, wrapped in wet newspaper, and you were the one left holding the clipboard because Mr Haskell had gone home with his chest. Frost silvered the yard. Mrs Tolley wanted forty stems by seven for the Rainford wedding, and half the buds were still tight as knuckles.

You knew the trick her mother had taught her: cut them in the cold, sink them to the neck in a bucket, and never let them see the sun before they have decided to open. You worked with a penknife, stripping the lower leaves, grey-green and heavy with dew, and thought about the drawing Mr Haskell had pinned above the potting bench, a single bloom in pencil so fine you could count the creases in its petals.
By six the sky over the moor had gone the colour of weak tea. One bucket still held a head that refused to unfurl, its centre dark and clenched. You almost put it on the compost heap. Instead you set it on the windowsill beside the radio, where the first light would reach it before anything else did.
At a quarter to seven it had opened, the outer petals falling back like a skirt shaken out, the dark heart showing through. Mrs Tolley came in stamping her boots and asked why you had kept the ugly one back. You said it was the only one that had waited for the light. She laughed and said that was no reason to be sentimental, then took it anyway for her own buttonhole.
