Infinity symbol on the inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black infinity symbol is tattooed on the inner forearm, above the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The woman's face is cropped out, and the soft, muted photograph shows her hands, a white top, grey shorts and a gold bracelet against a dark green background.

The ferrymen of Ostrel Sound never counted their crossings. You learned that the spring you turned fourteen, when your uncle set a wet rope across your palms and told you to walk it hand over hand until the knots ran out. They never ran out. Each loop folded back on itself at a narrow waist in the middle, where the two halves crossed, and he laughed when you asked where the rope ended.

In the kingdom of Harrowmere the Crown paid by the mile, and the ferries ran a figure-eight route around the drowned churches. Your uncle's ledger had a page for every boat that had gone out and not come back. He taught you to draw the sign in ink beside each name: a sideways eight, the mark for a thing that keeps going. Pen steady, no shading, one unbroken line that doubles at its centre. Chalk it on the slate, he said, and the tide can't argue with it.
The summer the Crown sent its surveyors, they wanted the ledger burned. They said the sign was heresy, a promise no sailor had any right to make. You stood at the slip with the book under your arm and grey water slapping the stones, and you read the names aloud, every one, until the surveyor's clerk gave up writing and simply watched you. Then you turned to the last page, where your uncle had drawn the mark beside his own name months before the mist took him.
You dipped the pen and began the loop at the centre, where the two halves meet, and let the line run out to the edge of the paper and back again.
