Floral heart tattoo on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo forms a heart made of three open five-petalled flowers, with buds, curling tendrils and leaves filling the outline. Crisp red linework defines the shapes, with the petals filled in soft pink, giving a flat, graphic look. The heart sits centrally on the upper back, with the shoulder blade visible at the top of the frame.

The nets came up the slip wet and smelling of diesel and weed, and Nell sat on an upturned crate with a bodkin in one hand and a ball of tarred twine in the other. Ada had taught her the marks years ago: a cross for the Lady Jane, a fish hook for Eddie Pascoe's little boat, a double loop for anything belonging to the widow Hale. Nobody else on the quay could tell one net from another without them.

The heart was the hardest. Ada had never let her tie it, saying it had to be done by someone who had stood on the cliff in May and watched the sea pinks push up through the rock. So Nell had walked the cliff path every morning that month, counting petals until she could draw the five-lobed blooms without looking, then the buds, then the tendrils that curled out from them like the ends of rope left to fray. She had shown Ada the drawing twice. Ada had said nothing both times.
When the net was finished, Ada came down the slip with her stick, studied the knot for a long moment and said it was crooked. Then she asked who it was for. Nell didn't answer. Out past the point, three hulls were still hanging in the grey, and the tide was turning under them. She pulled the twine tight and saw she had set the loop facing inward, the way you only tie something you mean to keep. She left it that way and went up the path to watch for the lights.
