Floral skull on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A skull is formed from dense black and grey floral ornament, including scrolling leaves, small blossoms and rounded flower shapes. Pink roses and a few touches of purple and teal sit among the greys and add colour. The skull is centred on the outer thigh, with a denim hem visible above and a wooden floor in the background.

The bed under the west window of Ward Nine had been bare brown soil and a bench nobody sat on when I started on nights. By March it had come up in a pattern, and only Hollis on the switchboard had the nerve to say what it was meant to be. From the fourth floor, with the corridor lights dimmed, you could see it plainly: a skull, its eye sockets two round patches of gravel, its jaw a low border of silver leaves that Joan Pennock called lamb's ears.

Joan came in on Thursdays with a flask and a trowel and a cardigan that smelled of compost. She had planted it, she told me, for the porters who used to push trolleys through the old tunnels before the new block went up, men who never got a window of their own. The roses were for the ones who went home. The purple was for the ones who didn't, and she wouldn't say which bed was which. The teal, she said, was just because she had a tin of it left over from a door.
On a wet Tuesday I took my break outside with a tea I should not have been carrying. The sodium lamp made everything the colour of weak lemonade, but the roses still held their pink and the scrolled leaves shone where the rain had got into them. Somebody had left a laminated card tucked under a stone at the skull's temple. It said only: Look down, love. You're allowed one minute. I stood there with the tea going cold, looking down at a face made of things that grow, until the kettle back on the ward would have boiled dry. For once, I let it.
