Matching sugar skull tattoos on forearms
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms each carry a sugar skull with patterned eye sockets, scrollwork and small diamond shapes, surrounded by roses. The bold black outlines are filled with colour: blue and yellow eyes, purple and red roses, and green leaves. The skulls are placed side by side, with the left one in cooler tones and the right one in warmer tones.

Dorrit Vance kept two painted skulls on the shelf above the bread oven of the Marigold, one with blue eyes and one with yellow, and her grandmother's rule was plain: give them a heel of bread every Sunday or they would come down off the shelf in the night and count the flour. Nobody aboard believed it until the flour went missing twice in one week, and the cook's boy swore he had seen the blue one's jaw moving.

Dorrit did not argue. She took the heel from her own supper, crumbled it into the blue skull's painted eyes, then the yellow one's, and set them back with their roses turned toward the fire. The ship was rolling through the Bay of Biscay and the galley was so cold the bread had frozen to the board. She said the warm one would keep the heat in and the cold one would keep the hands honest, and that the two of them had never once been parted since the carver made them.
The storms of that month came and went, and the flour stayed where it was. On the last night before Lisbon, Dorrit found the crumbs gone from the blue skull's eyes and a single rose petal, pressed flat with frost, lying on the board in front of the warm one. She left a heel out again on the Sunday, and it was gone by morning.
Her grandmother would have called it fair trade. Dorrit called it the cook's share, and tied the flour sacks a little tighter.
