Skull with daisy crown on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A shaded skull with a crown of pink and yellow daisies is tattooed on the outer thigh of a person wearing a floral skirt. The skull is rendered in soft grey tones with detailed shading across the cheekbones and teeth, while the flowers add the only colour. The skull sits centrally in the frame, with the skirt cropping the top of the image.

By the time the florist's van limps up the lane to St Ia's, you have already counted the church bells twice and lost count of the rooks. Mrs Tregenza climbs out with a flat tyre on her mind and a box of daisies on her lap, and she hands you the crown without apology, the stems still cold from the cool room. "Wear them low," she says. "Brides always think they should sit high. The dead like to be looked after too."

You laugh, because you take it for a joke about the churchyard, and because your mother's ring is already threaded on a string under your dress. Inside, the vestry smells of damp hymn books and a candle someone forgot to snuff. Your sister pins the crown while you stare at the old painted board above the door, a skull with a ribbon of flowers that a local signwriter made in 1912 for a funeral that never happened. Nobody remembers who asked for it.
Halfway through the vows, a petal drops onto the open order of service, and you watch it lie there, pale against the print. You think of the skull grinning up at the rafters where the rain comes through. Mrs Tregenza said the flowers were for the living. She never said which living.
Afterwards, in the lane with the van still propped on its jack, you pull the last daisy from the crown and do what every child does, one petal for yes, one for no. The count comes out even. You tuck the flower into your pocket and walk on, and the rooks, for once, keep quiet.
