Floral swirl tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand and forearm show a tattoo of flowing leaves, curling stems, small blossoms and scattered dots. The lines are thin and sketch-like, with little shading, and the ink reads as dark blue-grey against the skin. The design runs diagonally from the wrist up the forearm against a soft, blurred green background.

The ferry is late again, so you walk the shingle road to Corran Bay with the sketchbook buttoned inside your coat, the way Aunt Morven taught you before her chest got too bad for walking. Rain has flattened the sea thrift. You kneel where bindweed climbs the old kelp stacks and draw what the wind has left: a stem curling back on itself like a question, a leaf thin as onion skin, a cluster of seed heads you count out loud because she always counted.

By the third afternoon your pencil has learned the island's habits. Everything here turns toward the water and then turns away again. Morven's drawings sit in a biscuit tin in the keeper's cottage, pages of stems looping round the margins, and beside each one is a small dot where she pressed a seed into the paper. Nobody on Scarrow ever planted anything on purpose. The plants came in on the tide and stayed because they liked the look of the place.
On the last evening the boat finally docks, and the postman hands you a parcel in her handwriting. Inside is a single seed head wrapped in tissue, and a note that says only: plant it where the wind can't reach. You walk up past the chapel to the flat ground behind the dyke, dig a hole with a tablespoon, and press the seed in. When the ferry pulls away you are already sketching the first green fist of a shoot, its leaves curling in the same direction as the line you drew on the rocks.
