Dandelion seeds turning into birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion seed head sits near the wrist, with its seeds drifting along the forearm and gradually becoming small flying birds. The linework is fine and the dandelion head has soft grey shading, while the birds are solid black silhouettes. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the tattoo fills the length of the forearm against a blurred, light background.

The ringmaster sold the last of the performing finches in March, but nobody had told the wind. I found Mags on the step of the caravan at the lay-by outside Cromer, picking dandelion clocks from the verge and blowing them one by one at the grey sky, counting under her breath the way she used to count the cats in the act.

Our turn had been called the Seedsmen, back when there were three rings and a band that could still play in tune. Dad would stand at the centre pole with a paper cone of seed heads and puff them out, and a dozen pigeons dyed the colour of sherbet would peel off the rafters and chase them round the sawdust. The trick was timing. You had to let the seeds go before the birds could see where they were heading, or they would bolt for the exit.
Mags said the trick had never really been the birds. Her mother had taught her that a seed on its own is only a seed, and that the whole business happened in the moment it stopped being one, when the gaps between the drifting specks grew wings and started keeping time together. I thought it was the sort of thing a woman says when she is eighty and the tent has been sold for scrap. Then she stood up, lifted the last clock to her mouth and blew, and across the field two sparrows came off the hedge and wheeled over the car park after the seeds.
We didn't stay to see them land. The axle gave a last crack, the lorry rolled, and when I looked back in the wing mirror there were only seeds drifting towards the road, and Mags laughing with her hands in her lap, the birds still keeping pace above her.
