Colour botanical tattoo of pink, purple and black flowers with green vines on an upper arm, with a white top visible beside it.

Floral tattoo on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows pink blossoms, a large purple and white orchid-like flower, and dark flowers with small buds, joined by fine green vine scrolls running down the arm. The shading is soft and painterly, with colour ink dominating over a few dark areas. The arm fills the right side of the frame, with a blurred outdoor background and a sleeveless white top at the edge.

The glasshouse at Kettering Park had been locked since the autumn, but Maud still had the key on her ring, between the bicycle lock and the one for her mother's shed. She let herself in at half six with a flask of tea and a paper bag of bread crusts for the robins. The orchids were in the back bay, where the heating pipes ran warm under the benches, and she knew before she reached them that the purple one had flowered. Nobody had told her. It simply had, the way things do when you stop watching them.

Derek from the council had said the collection would go to a garden centre in Harrogate once the lease was signed, and that the cuttings could be taken home by anyone who asked nicely. Maud had asked nicely for eleven years. She knelt on the wet tiles and counted what she could carry: a pink bloodred geranium in a yoghurt pot, two rooted vine tips wrapped in damp newspaper, and the one fat orchid bloom she would never be allowed to own, which she cut anyway with her good scissors.

By the time the commuters were pushing past the gates, her coat pockets were full of green and the flask had gone cold. She walked home the long way, past the bus shelter where a boy was sketching blossoms on the back of a receipt, and stopped to show him the bloom. He asked whether it was real. She told him it was the only thing she had ever stolen, and that it had been waiting for someone to take it.
