Vintage floral bouquet on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cascading bouquet of peonies, roses, columbine and morning glory flowers, with green leaves and buds, runs down the upper arm. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth gradients in pink, red, peach and blue. The pale background and white lace top keep attention on the arm, and no face is visible.

Sit closer, the lamp only lights the one corner, and I've told the children the rest of the dark belongs to the wind. Right. You want the one about the painter's garden, the one that got carried up the hill in a sack of seed when the coast went under. My grandmother's grandmother swore it was true, and she never once told a lie that didn't come with a biscuit.

The garden was no longer a garden. It was a wall of old prints pressed flat between glass, and a single bundle of cuttings that a woman named Oriel kept wet in a clay pot on the sill. She had nothing to paint with but the memory of colour. So every morning she drew a peony from the print in pencil, then a rose, then the blue bells of columbine that hung off their stems like small lanterns. The morning glories were the hardest. They only opened for an hour, and by then the light had gone thin and grey across the hill.
Then one spring a boy came up from the salt flats with a tin of ochre and a rag. He had never seen a flower bigger than his thumb. Oriel gave him a brush and told him to paint the peony pink from the inside out, the way the old masters did, layer over layer, until the colour looked like it was breathing. He worked for nine days. On the tenth, the cuttings in the pot pushed out buds the exact colour of his tin.
That is why the hill is green, they say, and why the boy's grandsons still carry a little ochre in their pockets. Nobody remembers the painting itself. Only the way the petals catch the light, soft at the edges, as if the whole bouquet might lean down and ask you to stay.
