Floral tattoo on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A close crop of a torso and raised left arm, with the head out of frame. The arm carries a large flower tattoo with a bloom and several buds, drawn in soft grey shading with red and pink tones in the petals. The composition is cropped tightly around the arm, layered beaded necklaces, a patterned crop top and a dark floral kimono.

The peonies at Hollins Farm came up late that year, after the frost had taken the first buds in April. Ruth Pardoe walked the rows with a trug on her hip and secateurs she never put down, counting the knuckles of green that had survived. Her brother Alan thought she was wasting her time on the dark-centred one by the water butt. "It's a weed with ambitions," he said, leaning on the gate.

She had taken the cutting from their mother's garden in Boston Spa, a plant nobody else in the village could name. Its bloom opened the colour of weathered brick, then pinked at the edges like a cheek after the wind. Ruth kept the grey-green buds in a jam jar on the windowsill of the packing shed, turning it each morning so they faced the light, the way her mother had taught her with seedlings.
In June the bloom finally split. Ruth cut three stems at dawn, wrapped them in wet newspaper and drove to the market at Selby before the first van arrived. A florist from Harrogate bought the lot without haggling, held one up to the window and said nothing for a long moment. Ruth did not tell her the plant had no name yet.
On the way home she stopped at the gate, where Alan had left the water butt lid open. Two buds floated in it, sodden and pale. She fished them out with two fingers, shook them dry and set them on the sill beside the jar. By morning the petals had gone soft as paper, and she thought of her mother saying a flower only has to open once to be counted.
