Gold metallic temporary tattoos on shoulder and arm

Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A close crop of a woman with long blonde hair in an orange top, with a gold necklace at her collarbone. Gold metallic temporary tattoos show a scale pattern on the upper shoulder, a feather and an arrow on the forearm and wrist, and an eye design near the hand. The linework is solid and flat, with no shading, and the gold ink dominates against warm orange and skin tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The herring had gone deep that year, and the people of Holm said it was because the sea had taken a fancy to gold. Ailsa Benn did not believe this until the morning her father came up the cliff path with a scale in his palm, as wide as a coin and bright as a new sovereign, caught in the mesh of his net.

The old women said a gold-scaled fish only rose for someone who could read the water. So Ailsa took the bow her uncle had left her, a plain ash stave strung with gut, and one arrow fletched with grey heron feathers. She rowed out past the skerries at slack water and sat with the sun on her back until something broke the surface, a flash like a struck match.

It was not a fish. It was a long swirl of light that turned beneath the hull and looked up at her with an eye the colour of wet slate, and she understood that it had been waiting for someone who would not shoot. She lowered the bow. The thing sank, and for a moment the water lay flat and gold where it had been, then went ordinary grey.

When she came home her father was mending nets on the step. He asked what she had caught. She held out the arrow, still whole, and said nothing, and he laughed until he had to sit down. Every spring after, a gold scale turned up in the mesh, and every spring she carried it back out past the skerries and gave it to the sea.
