Lettering and lotus tattoos on forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close crop of a woman in a white t-shirt printed with a sun and moon illustration, with her arms visible. The left forearm carries black fine line lettering reading KEEP GRL PWR and a script line reading Carpe Diem, while the right arm has a mandala-style design and a coloured lotus tattoo near the elbow. The black lettering is crisp and the lotus uses soft red and brown shading against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lamp is going out and the story is not finished. You want to know why the lotus opens at dawn and shuts its face at dusk? Listen. In Alexandria, when the reed boats still came up the canal heavy with papyrus and salt, there was a girl called Tamsin who sold water lilies from a basket by the harbour steps. She was not the prettiest seller there, nor the richest, but she had a habit of saying the same thing to every customer, whether they bought or not. Seize the day, she would tell the old fishermen. Seize it before it closes.

The fishermen laughed at her, and the scribe who wrote letters for the dockers copied her words onto a strip of papyrus and pinned it above his table, half as a joke. One grey morning a sailor came in with a letter his mother had written in a hand he could barely read, and the scribe read it aloud to him slowly. It said only: come home while the lilies are still open. He had been away eleven years.

He went that same day. He did not stop to finish his fish soup or pay what he owed. Tamsin watched his boat slide out past the lighthouse and, for the first time, she felt foolish for being right. Then she went back to her basket, because the lilies had not waited for anyone and neither would the sun.

Her lilies still close at dusk, and nobody in Alexandria has ever thought to ask them to stay. Now blow out the lamp.
