The kiosk at Hallow Cross smells of cut stems and diesel now, and I have stopped minding. Mr Pryce from the signal box brings me a thermos every morning and says the roses look like they're waiting for a train. I tell him they are waiting for the 7.12 to Carlisle, which takes their buyers and leaves the rest of us with the petals.

The red ones came from Mum's garden, the climbing kind that sulked for years against the shed wall. You remember how she wouldn't let anyone prune them. Last week a stem got bent in the goods yard, and when I took the bruised head off with my knife, the leaves underneath were a green so bright it hurt. I put a single pink bloom in a jam jar by the till and sold it to a man in a grey overcoat who never looked up from his ticket.

Tomorrow the line closes for works until March, and the platform will be bare concrete and pigeons. I have kept the last crate back. I am going to carry it down to the old waiting room at the far end and leave the roses on the bench, tied with the green twine from the shed. Somebody will find them, I expect, and wonder who was so careless with something so pretty.
