I told him it was our mother's, which was true, and he stamped my form with the look of a man who had heard worse from smugglers and liked me less for being honest.

I've potted it in the yellow glazed pot you gave me, the one with the chip on the rim. The red blooms opened all at once this week, as if they'd been waiting for the sea air. Between them the leaves curl into the grey swirls Mum used to draw on the backs of the gas bills, her wind on paper, she called it. I sat on the back step with the pot in my lap and felt, for the first time since the funeral, that something had arrived where it was meant to be.
Mr Okonedo from next door knocked this morning and asked if he could take a cutting for his own sill. I said yes before I'd thought about it. There's a rule about cuttings, you'd say, but that rule was written by people who never had a mother who could root a stick in a jam jar.
Tell Dad the rest of the tin is his. Write back soon and tell me if the bench is still under the laburnum at the cottage, and whether anyone has finally cut the grass where we buried the spoons.
