Mind the puddle by the fish crates, the one that's been there since the flood took the bridge. Right. The painter's name was Tobias Wren, and he came to Amberley market the spring the roses failed, when every hedge in the valley went black with greenfly and the women stopped wearing red. He had a box of charcoal, a tin of soot-black ink, and a face he would not stop drawing.

Whose face? Nobody knew. He drew it on the backs of butchers' bills and on wet paper pinned to his stall, always with a beard that fell like a curtain and hair long enough to tie back. The stallholders gave him a crust for his trouble. The girl who sold thread asked him once who it was, and he said, 'Someone who waited a long time at a door and was let in.' Then he put a single rose beside the face and shaded its petals so dark the rain could not wash them out.
The rain came back that October and did not leave. The market flooded to the ankle. Wren sat under a tarpaulin with his drawings going to pulp, and still he worked, because charcoal is a thing you can keep hold of with your hands while the rest of you drowns. On the last Saturday he finished the face, and the sun came out for the length of a breath, and every puddle in the square went gold.
They say he walked away down the lane with his tin on his shoulder and was never seen again, and the thread girl kept the last drawing folded in her apron. Her daughter has it still, gone soft at the creases, and if you ask her nicely she'll show you the rose. Mind your step on the way out.
