Floral vine linework across a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large black outline tattoo of stylised flowers, leaves and curling vines runs across the outer thigh and up towards the hip. The linework is bold and even with no shading, and the design sits in a flowing diagonal composition. The image is in natural light and shows the tattoo on pale skin with no other colours present.

Mrs Pargeter had given Ada the outline work because her hand was steady and her ink never bled. Ada spent the first winter tracing acanthus and briar onto calico for the Hollin Street print works, black line only, no wash, because the copperplate men said colour was for cheaper houses. Her pattern for the dining-room paper was meant to roll across a wall in one long diagonal, leaves turning over leaves, and she was proud of how even each stroke had come out.

The trouble started in March, when the vines outran her sheets. She would lay down a scroll at the edge of the drawing board and find, the next morning, that it had pushed another inch past the pencil guide. A bramble she had drawn with four thorns had five. A rose she had never finished had opened on the paper in the shape of a closed fist. Mrs Pargeter blamed the damp and sent the boy up with a pan of salt, but Ada kept a ruler beside the board and measured the growth each night, and it always ran the same way: up and across, towards the window and the wet fields beyond.
On the last night of the month she sat with her pen over a fresh sheet and drew nothing at all. The room was quiet except for the clock. When she looked down there was already a line on the paper she did not remember making, bold and unbroken, curling away from her wrist towards the open door. She followed it without lifting the nib until grey light came up over the mill roofs and the ink had dried on a long, flowing vine that ran off the edge of the page and kept going.
