Peony and rose cluster on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of peonies, roses and buds with leaves sits on the side of the ribcage, arranged in a diagonal sweep across the skin. The flowers are drawn with dark outlines and soft grey shading that gives the petals depth. The photograph is taken from the side against a plain white brick wall, with the arm across the frame and the skin lit evenly.

The mule would not take the last bend below the Kessen Saddle, so Ilse Varra unloaded the salt herself, sack by sack, while the wind drove snow sideways across the path and filled the ruts as fast as she cleared them. Her brother had laughed when she packed the wet moss and the clay pots, but he had not offered to carry anything, and she had not asked him to.

Everyone in the valley knew that Old Anka kept a garden above the tree line, where nothing should grow. She had planted it with cuttings carried up in her apron, peonies first and then roses, and each spring the rocks there went pink and heavy with blossom. Anka was dead now, and the garden had gone wild, though people said the flowers still came up every year in the same shapes, drawn in with a fine hand and shaded grey at the edges, as if someone were still working on them by lamplight.
Ilse found the cluster just before dark, pushing up through a crack in the granite. The blooms were closed tight and the colour had drained from them, so they looked like ink on paper. She cut one bud free, wrapped it in the wet moss, and started down. Halfway to the snowline she felt its weight change in her palm, as if something inside had turned over to wake.
At the inn at the foot of the pass she set the pot on the windowsill and went to bed without eating. In the morning the peony had opened, its outer petals curling back and its leaves shaded darker where the light did not reach, and the room smelled of cold stone and something sweet. The innkeeper said the garden up top would be bare now. Ilse said it would not, and she was right, because it was the carrying that kept the flowers coming.
