Little Mermaid characters outline on thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of a mermaid, likely Ariel, surrounded by cartoon sea characters, a conch shell and bubbles, arranged in a loose circle. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or colour. It sits on the upper thigh and is photographed close up against dark fabric.

"Those are for my cousin," he said. "She's in hospital in Calais and she isn't allowed visitors, so I draw her the ones she likes."
Maud turned the pages slowly. There was a conch shell coiling like a tiny galaxy, and bubbles rising in careful rings around everybody, as though the whole sea had been measured with a compass. On the last page the crab appeared again, this time with a speech bubble in capitals that read GET WELL SOON, YOU BIG SULKING FISH.
She looked at the grandfather, who shrugged. She looked at the queue of lorries stretching back past the roundabout, engines idling, and thought about how long a mermaid could hold her breath before anyone noticed she had swum off the page. Then she stamped the inside cover with the day's date, which she was not supposed to do, and slid the pad back under the glass.
"Tell your cousin the crab has to apologise," she said. "Crabs always do in the end."
