Floral vine tattoo across the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot with dark red toenail polish is shown against a plain white background, with a tattoo across the top of the foot. The tattoo shows three flowers with petals drawn in outline, linked by curling vine lines that sweep towards the ankle and toes. The linework is thin and the shading is light and even, with no colour ink used.

Dear Tomasz,

The night train from Leeds was empty except for a man asleep under a newspaper, so I had the table to myself and your drawing of the ironwork gate on the back of an envelope. You were right about the gate. Mr Okonedo's shop on Kirkgate has been rebuilt twice since the war, but the scrollwork that sweeps off the lintel is the same, and I sat on the cold step under the streetlamp for an hour copying the curl of it while the buses hissed past.

Something else happened tonight that I need to tell someone who knows how I draw. A woman came into the print room at closing, wanting her grandmother's sampler copied onto a sheet of vellum. Three flowers in a row, outlined and nothing else, with a vine running off them that trailed toward the door as if it were looking for the way out. She had kept the thread colours in her head and wanted only the lines. I told her I couldn't do the colour and she laughed and said her grandmother had never used colour either, just black thread on linen, and that the petals had been left empty on purpose so the light could sit inside them.

I made the copy by the lamp until gone one. The lines were so thin the vellum nearly refused the nib, and by the end my hand ached in a way I haven't felt since we were boys. When she came back at seven I gave her the sheet and she held it up to the window and turned it slowly, the way you tilt a letter to read it through.

Write back soon. Tell me if the gate is still standing.

Yours, Ruth
