Fine line vine tattoo on an ankle and foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a delicate vine with spiralling tendrils, small leaves and dotted accents runs from the lower leg down the ankle and across the top of the foot. The linework is thin and mostly unshaded, with fine dots adding texture along the stems. The photo is taken against a black background, so the skin tone and the tattoo stand out clearly.

Dear Nell, The vine on the old railway arch behind Cutler Street has finally got over the wire, and I stood under it last night with the lamp from the signal box, counting the frost that had settled on its dots. Every spiral ends in a little tail that curls back on itself, as if the plant had second thoughts about leaving the brick. Two leaves have gone the colour of old pennies, and one has a fold in it like a letter someone started and never sent.

Dev from the depot came out with his flask while I was at it and said the council men are coming Monday with their saws. They want the whole arch clear for the new cycle path. He thought I would be cross. I wasn't, not really. I've watched that thing feel its way up the ironwork for three summers, reaching for anything solid, and I have never once seen it climb backwards.
So I've made a bargain with myself. They can have the low runners, the ones that have only ever gone where the drains are. The tall end, the part that caught the lamp post at the corner and wound round it four times, stays. I told Dev to tell the men to mind the dots. He laughed, but he'll tell them.
The last tram went past at half eleven with its lights on and nobody inside, and the vine shivered the way it does when the wind has nowhere else to go. Put the kettle on when you get this. I'll be home before the first frost takes the rest. Yours, Ada
