Spider lily, vines and butterfly on a foot
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A red spider lily with long, curling petals sits on the ankle and shin, linked by swirling vines in red, orange, green, blue and purple to a blue butterfly on the top of the foot. The linework is fine and outlined, with some soft shading within the petals and butterfly wings. The bright colours stand out against the pale skin and dark leather-look surface, and the design wraps from the ankle down across the foot.

The vine that grew over the sluice gate last summer has finally reached the rail of the lock-house steps. I tied the green end to the iron with a strip of your old oilskin, the way you showed me, so it would hold. I did not chase it off. I thought of you, because you always said the sea was just a long road with weather on it.
Come home on whatever tide the Kestrel will carry you. Mr Abbott at the lock says she is due at Gravesend by the first of October. I have ringed the date on the kitchen calendar in red, the same colour as the lilies, and I have stopped counting the days out loud because Mam says it makes the wait longer.
If you are reading this by the galley lamp with the ship swinging under you, eat something hot and do not trust the cook's bread. Your sister, Nell.
