Floral vine tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A long, looping vine of leaves and small flowers in black ink runs from the upper thigh down the outer leg. The linework is fine and delicate, with dotted accents and open shading, and the piece is entirely black and grey. Beside it, a hand rests on white lace and shows a small eye tattoo and a crescent moon tattoo on the fingers, plus a dark marking near the wrist.

Dear Tom,

The clematis you planted against the back wall before you went down the shaft has gone wild this month. It has climbed over the coal house roof and run along the drainpipe, and this morning I found a leaf pushing through the gap under the kitchen sill where the putty has gone. Mam says to cut it back before it brings the damp in. I have not had the heart.

The night shift whistle went at ten and I stood at the back door with the lamp, as you asked, so you could see it from the ridge road. Mrs Harrow from number nine says the lamps look like a second moon sliding down the valley when the cages come up. She meant it kindly. Nan's lace curtains are still on the line in the yard. I took them in before the rain and the sprigs of flowers caught on my cardigan like they wanted to come along.

Yesterday the gate to the lane would not shut. The vine had wound itself round the bolt in a loop as wide as a dinner plate, little white flowers and all, and when I tried to pull it free a whole length of stem came away in my hand with its roots still in the soil. I did not pull again. I tied it to the post with a bit of your old twine instead, and it has held.

So you will have to duck under it when you come up the lane in the morning, with the coal dust still in your ears. I have left it to grow. Someone should keep the way open, and I would rather it was green than the other thing.
