Mandala tattoo on the outer thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman sits on a wooden floor in a loose white t-shirt, with the camera focused on her bare leg. A large black mandala, built from stacked circular rings of fine petals and dotted detail, sits on the outer thigh. The image is bright and evenly lit, with the tattoo shown in sharp, dark contrast against the skin.

The rosette had come out of the north transept in forty-one pieces, each wrapped in newspaper from a year nobody remembered. Ada laid them on the trestle in rings, outermost first, the way her father had taught her, because a rose window is built from its edges inwards and anyone who starts in the middle ends up with a hole that wants to be a petal. By midnight the lead was grey with six hundred winters of dust, and the chapel smelled of cold stone and linseed.

The petals were the hard part. There were eight in the first ring, then sixteen, then a band of tiny teardrops cut from offcuts by someone who had clearly been bored or in love. Ada matched each shard by the colour it kept when she held it to the lamp: a green that turned blue at the edge, a red so deep it looked black until the light caught it. The night watchman brought her tea at two and did not ask what she was doing, which she appreciated.
Near four, with the first birds starting up outside, she found the last piece. It was a small disc of clear glass, no colour at all, sitting in the very centre where the design should have been dark. She turned it over and found a ring of dots scratched into the back with a nail, eight petals and a dot in the middle, and beneath them the words *keep the middle clear*.
She set the disc in at six, as the sun cleared the roofline. Light came through the outer rings first, red and green and bruised blue, and gathered towards the centre until it landed on the flagstones in one sharp rosette, the petals repeating themselves on the stone as if the window had been waiting all along to be looked at from below. Ada wiped her hands on her apron and went to find the kettle.
