The hedge along the lane had gone wild the summer the miller's daughter came back from the city with nothing but a satchel and a bad cough. Her mother set her to clearing the bramble for the goats, and she worked with her sleeves rolled, pulling the thorns through her hands and laying the cuttings on the wall to dry.

On the fourth morning the old carrier stopped his cart at the gate and asked what she meant to do with the roses. She said nothing, they were only dog roses, and the carrier shook his head and said that wild things always came back when you cut them, that the root kept its own counsel. He drove on towards the market at Wrexham with his load of eggs and did not look back.
That night the peony by the well opened early, though it was not yet June, and its petals lay open on the dark like a lamp turned low. The miller's daughter sat up with it. She heard the goats settle, the bell on the gate knock once in the wind, and when the grey light came she saw that the wild roses had climbed the wall in the night, their buds nodding over the stones, their red hips already swelling.
She went down to the gate with her shears in her hand and found she could not cut them. She stood there until her mother called her in for bread, and in the end she left the hedge exactly as it was.
