Flower and ace of spades skull on forearms
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side. On the left, a hanging flower with a curled stem and several leaves is rendered in bold black outlines with grey shading. On the right, an ace of spades holds a skull, with a skeletal hand below and a dotwork shaded background behind the card. The work uses only black ink and greys, with the composition centred on each arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The last bloom on Hesper Ring was hanging over the bulkhead when the dealer slid the ace across the table, and you knew from its weight that the game was finished. Nobody on the lower decks had seen a camellia since the drum sealed, and the gardeners sold only cuttings, never whole flowers. You had carried this one in your coat for three days, its stem wrapped in wet cloth, planning to trade it for passage to the outer docks where the air tasted of rain.

The ace was printed on salvaged stock, the spade gone grey at the edges, the skull inked in by a printer that had died before the second war. Its bony hand reached up from the dust below the card, fingers curled as if to take something from you. Behind it the cargo bay was speckled with dark dots, a thousand tiny stars that the old fitters swore were the mark of a true card. The dealer tapped the skull with one knuckle and said nothing at all. Waiting was the whole of his trade.
You pushed the flower across the felt. He turned it over slowly, looked at the curl of the stem, and laughed for the first time that evening. He did not want the bloom. He wanted the wet cloth, which was the only clean thing left on the table, and he folded it into his breast pocket as though it were worth more than the debt.
You walked out without a ticket, your coat lighter by a single weight. Somewhere behind you, the card game went on, and the last petal you had kept in your palm drifted down through the still air and settled on the deck like a coin nobody wanted to spend.
