Flower and swirl design on a hip
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline flower with a filled centre sits at the centre of the image, surrounded by curling scrolls, small dots and tendril-like swirls that extend up and down. The linework is smooth and uniform in a single black ink with no shading, and the design appears to be a flat tonal fill rather than coloured ink. The tattooed skin fills most of the frame on a sunny beach, with the top edge of a pink bikini and a blurred sandy background.

The paste had already gone dull on the cloth when the boy asked her to make the flower bigger. Nell Pascoe had worked this stretch of Gwithian sand since her mother gave up the pitch, and she knew a design that needed more room when she saw one. She tipped the cone, wiped her fingers on her apron, and started again at the centre, the way her mother had taught her: fill the petals first, then let the scrolls find their own way out.

Behind her the tide was creeping over the rocks, pushing grey lace of foam against the crates of cockles and the bottled water. The boy's father had brought a photograph on his phone, a flower his grandmother had once drawn on the lid of a biscuit tin in a kitchen in Penzance. Nell had never seen the tin, but she knew the hand that drew it: a fat, confident outline, a dot laid down like a full stop, and tendrils that curled back on themselves as if they were listening for something.
She worked slowly. The swirls kept wanting to run off the edge of whatever she gave them, and she let them, because her mother had never once stopped a curl halfway. When the boy asked whether it would last, she told him two weeks, maybe three, depending on how much sun he chased and how often he went in the sea. He nodded as though that were the right answer and went back to his sandcastle.
She sat back on her heels when she finished and counted the dots along the tendrils. There were seven, one for each summer her mother had sold flowers from this stall before the winter the sea took the pitch. Nell wiped the cone clean, packed it in her bag, and left the eighth dot for whoever came next.
