Flower bouquet in a vase on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large bouquet of flowers sits in a blue and black vase, featuring a red poppy, two orange tulips and a cream daisy with green stems and leaves. Thick black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of saturated colour and a few gradient-like tones, and a stippled dotwork texture forms the base. The design wraps across the upper arm and towards the shoulder, with a faint grey sketch-like shading behind the left-hand flower.

This year it was the blue one, the thick glazed thing with the black foot that had belonged to her mother, and it had cracked along one side in the spring. Nobody was supposed to know. Ada knew.

On the Friday before the supper, the bakery boy came in with a box of tulips that had been sent from Lowestoft by mistake, orange as marmalade and still tight in the bud. "Can't you do something with them?" he asked, and Ada said she could do anything with flowers provided they were given time. She cut the stems on the slant under a bowl of water, tucked the daisies in at the back where the window light would catch their cream petals, and set the poppy, which had come up overnight in the bed by the coal shed, right in the middle, red as a pillar box.
The vase held. It had held through years of rain on the step and a fortnight of kettle steam. When the vicar's wife came round at six to see the arrangement, she stood in the doorway a long while without speaking.
"You've put the poppy at the top," she said at last.
"It was always going to be at the top," Ada said. She dried her hands on her apron and did not explain.
