Wild rose and rosehips on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two wild rose blooms, one pale pink with a yellow centre and stamens, one deeper magenta partly behind it, with red rosehips and serrated green leaves. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients on the petals and fine highlights on the hips and leaves. The design sits against an orange-gold wash behind the flowers and is framed by the curve of the upper thigh.

In the kingdom of Aldermere the old king kept a glasshouse full of roses brought over the sea in ships, and he would not have a wild one growing anywhere in the realm. Each spring the hedgers dug out the briars along the river and burned their roots. Old Gerda, who kept the ferry, said this was foolishness, but nobody asked Gerda.

The winter the harvest failed, the glasshouse roses gave nothing to eat, and the lower town grew thin. Gerda's granddaughter, Wenna, went down to the river anyway, because the king's men had missed one bush under the old mill wall. Its hips hung on the stems, red as sealing wax, and beside them a pale pink bloom had opened in the frost, with a yellow heart full of dust like gold flour. Wenna picked the hips and carried them home in her apron.

She boiled them into a syrup and spooned it into the children, and by the thaw the sickness had left the lanes. When the king came down to see for himself, he found that the hedgers had been hiding briars under their coats all winter, a dozen bushes tucked behind the byres. He stood a long time at the water with his hat in his hands.

He did not burn them. That summer the riverbank bloomed pale pink and deep magenta from the ferry to the mill, and the glasshouse roses were left to die of their own polish. Every January after, the king's man came down the lane with an empty jar, and Gerda filled it from the red hips on her wall, and nobody asked her why.
