Traditional flower bouquet on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bundle of flowers tied at the stem with a ribbon runs down the upper arm, with red, teal and yellow blooms and dark green leaves. The flowers have bold black outlines and flat, solid fills typical of traditional work, with one large teal and yellow bloom at the centre. The photo is taken from the side and cropped at the neck, with a plain grey background.

Nobody buys a bouquet at the Starlight Rooms on a Saturday unless they have already decided who it is for, so when the man in the brown trilby lifted the teal and yellow one from my tray, I knew he had been rehearsing. I wrapped the stems in red ribbon the way Nan taught me, a double knot and then a tuck, while the band upstairs started something slow. Through the swing doors I could see the floor filling with couples in their good shoes.

He paid in coppers and sixpences, counting them twice on the glass. 'She likes the big flower best,' he said. 'The yellow one in the middle. Her mother had a frock with that same print.' I told him the blooms would last a week if he kept them out of the sun. He didn't leave. He stood turning the trilby round in his hands like a steering wheel, and the music changed to a foxtrot, and the doors kept swinging open and shut.
Ten minutes later I saw him at the edge of the floor, bouquet held low, scanning faces. A girl in a green frock was dancing with a sailor, laughing with her whole head thrown back. He watched her a long time. Then he walked past her, past the sailor, and gave the flowers to Mrs Pike at the cloakroom hatch with a small bow. Mrs Pike, who was seventy if she was a day, went pink to the ears and pinned the largest bloom to her cardigan. I swept up the loose ribbon ends afterwards and found one still knotted tight on the floorboards, where somebody had stepped round it all night and not thought to pick it up.
