Mountain range on ribs and pine tree on hand
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line mountain range runs across the side of the ribs, with three peaks drawn in thin black outline and partly shaded in grey. A small solid pine tree sits on the back of the hand at the wrist, shown in black ink. Both tattoos are in black and grey on bare skin against a plain light background.

Dear Nell,

The surveyor's cart broke an axle at Tollan Ford on Tuesday, so I have had three extra days in Carrick Bothy with nothing to do but count the peaks from the window. There are three of them above the glen, grey where the snow has not melted and black where the rock shows through, and the man who keeps the bothy says the locals call them the Widow's Skirts. I have stopped asking why. Mr Haig, who leads the planting crew, says the forestry men will be up here by spring with their seedlings in sacks.
Yesterday I walked up the lower slope with the chain and the theodolite and found a single pine already growing where no one planted it, bent flat by the wind and rooted in a crack like a fist. I measured it twice. It was nine inches high and I could not bring myself to write its number in the ledger, so I cut a sprig and have put it in my breast pocket, where it smells of resin and the cold.
I am told the company wants the ridgeline drawn by the first of August. I will draw it, of course, the three peaks in fine nib with a little shading on the north faces so the map will look like what it is. But I will leave the lone tree out. Some things a surveyor ought to keep off the record.
Write when you can. Tell Mother the weather here is holding, and that I have not fallen off anything yet.
Your brother, Tom
