A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman's daughter had carried the fire across the river for nine winters, because nobody else on the far bank could keep a flame alight in the wind. Her grandmother had said the sky was pierced long ago, and the cold stars leaked through the holes and burned the eyes of anyone who looked too long. So the fire had to be wrapped in tin, and the tin had to be carried by someone who did not blink.

At the border post that spring, a clerk with ink on his cuffs asked her what she carried. She said fire. He asked to see it, and she lifted the lantern, and the flame leaned toward the seal on his desk as if it knew the wax. He laughed and waved her through, because nobody believes a flame can be a passport. The guards did not notice that the sparks inside the glass were not sparks at all but small white stars, drifting slowly, in no hurry to be anywhere.

On the far side, the road climbed into hills where the sky hung low enough to touch. She set the lantern on a flat stone and opened the tin. The flame came out in long tongues, purple at the root and rose at the heart, and where it touched the hillside the frost melted into a ring of blue light. Her grandmother's rule was simple: carry the fire until you find the place where the stars are thin. She had found it.

She kept the flame burning until the ring of light reached the village gate. Then she walked back down with the empty tin, which rang like a bell all the way to the river.
