A small songbird is shown mid-flight with its wings spread wide and its talons extended beneath it. The bird is rendered in fine black linework with stippled dotwork shading that builds up the feathers, breast and wing texture. The design is in black and grey and sits centred on the limb against a plain, pale background.

The bird came through the open side of the marquee at Hollins Farm just as Maddie's father reached the line about loving her till the hedges grew tall. It struck the top of a tent pole, dropped, then rose again with its wings flung wide against the white canvas, talons tucked under as if it had been reaching for something and missed.

Nobody moved. My mother, who had sewn every covered button on that dress, said it was a sparrow. It wasn't. It was a dunnock, and I knew that because I had spent a whole summer in the hide at Sallow Marsh with a battered field guide and a flask of cold tea, learning the difference between the birds people assume they know. I was the one who had promised to keep the sides tied down. I had untied them myself at four o'clock to let the air move, so the blame was mine to carry.

The bird settled on the rail of the cake table, feathers puffed against the cold, and regarded the three tiers as though it had been expecting them. Maddie laughed first, a proper honk that surprised her, and then the whole tent went with her. The vicar lost his place in the notes. Her new husband, Tom, bent down and offered it a crust of bread from the pocket of his waistcoat, which he had no business carrying and which everyone forgave him for.

When the bunting came down that evening I found a single brown feather caught in the chair cover where the bird had been. I put it in my shirt pocket. It is still there, bent at the tip, in the way a wing looks once it has been told it may go.
