Owl with starry wings on the thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl with spread wings sits at the centre of the design, its wide eyes reflecting small star shapes. Shading is soft and detailed, with fine feather texture on the wings and a strand of beads across the chest. Sparkling stars, dots and a crescent moon fill the background, and the tattoo is shown in black and grey tones on a thigh.

Your hands still smell of tar when the bell goes at the Greywater pier, and the lamp in the net loft has already guttered. Nobody else is awake to see the boats come in late, so the watch falls to you and the owl. Hob has perched on the winch rail for three winters, a grey owl with a face like a pale plate, and he has never once looked away from the water.

Old Ada Penhale strung his beads herself, from sea glass she gathered off the slipway, one bead for every boat the town lost and every one it brought home again. A watchman should carry his count, she said. Tonight the count is short. The Marion Rose is still out past the breakwater and her lantern is nowhere to be seen. You tip a bucket of seawater down the slipway steps, watch the moon lie flat on it, and say the boat's name aloud the way Ada taught you.
Hob drops from the rail without a sound. His wings open wider than your arms, and the stars caught in his eyes swing across the harbour like lanterns on a wire. He goes low over the rocks, climbs, and becomes only a dark shape against the sky, until a light answers from beyond the breakwater, a short flash and then a long one.
When the Marion Rose noses in at first grey, Ada is waiting on the steps with her shawl pulled tight. She counts the crew twice, touches the glass at her throat, and says nothing about the owl. Hob is back on the rail by then, feathers beaded with spray, and he watches the boat tie up as though he has been asked a question and has already answered it.
