Forearm tattoos beside a denim outfit

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cropped photograph of a person in a dark denim shirt with rolled sleeves and a button-front denim skirt, with no face visible. Both forearms show tattoos, with a dark figure on the right forearm and more ink on the left partly covered by the sleeve, and small tattoos are visible on the fingers. The image is shot straight on with soft, even lighting and the blue denim fills most of the frame.

Six brass studs ran down a single seam, each one set by hand at the kitchen table on Ferncliffe Road, because the mill that used to stamp them had shut in March and taken its machines with it.

The hawk came from the back of the old pattern book. Someone in 1962 had drawn it in biro along the margin, wings folded, head turned over one shoulder as if it had heard its name, and written underneath: for the lining, nobody looks. I didn't believe that. I cut the bird twice in dark thread on a scrap of indigo and stitched it inside the waistband, where the cloth had to be turned over to be seen.

Mrs Okonedo came in on the Thursday wanting a skirt she could wear to the depot without thinking about it. She turned the waistband over before I could stop her, went quiet for a long moment, then laughed, short and surprised. "Who told you to do that?" I said the margin did. She bought it on the spot and walked out in it, the buttons catching the light all the way down the street.

I still have the biro note pinned above the machine. Nobody looks, it says, and I've come to think it was never a warning. It was a dare.
