A small black swallow with outstretched wings sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, shown in dark ink with solid shading and fine detail. The tattoo is a small, central detail in a bright, soft-focus lifestyle composition.

Dear Ada,

The swallows came back on Tuesday, two of them first, low over the top field where the hay was still standing. I was in the yard with the bucket and nearly dropped it. You always said they could not find their way without us, that they went wrong every year and had to be shown the barn again. Well, they found it. They are back in the nest above the stable door, the one Father patched with mud last summer, and the cock bird is already mending the lip of it with his beak as if he had only popped out for bread.

Mrs Pardoe from the lane says a swallow that returns to the same nest is telling you it has been somewhere far and still knows the way home. She said it as though she had counted every one of them herself. I told her that was a foolish thing to believe about a bird, and she told me that was a foolish thing to say to a woman who has buried three husbands, and that I should mind my manners. I have been minding them.

The forest was grey at the edge this morning, and the wind came off Hollin Wood carrying the smell of wet bracken. Every evening I go out to the gate and watch them skim the top of the trees, dropping into the hedgerow and up again, sorting out who is who. I have not named them. You would have named them within the hour.

Come home for the hay, or for the second brood, whichever comes first. The nest is full and the stable door stays open. I will leave the lamp in the window so you can see the path from the wood.

Love, Nell
