Small green cactus tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small cactus with two arms is tattooed in green ink on the inner forearm, shown beside a denim jacket and patterned white trousers. The design is a simple, solid outline with little shading, and the single colour makes it stand out against the skin. The tight crop centres the tattoo on the right of the frame, with the outfit filling the background.

The cactus came off the back of a lorry outside Yuma with a bent arm and no name, and Dolores Wahl, who ran the petrol station there, said it looked like it had been waiting for someone to notice it was late. I was the one who noticed. I was driving the mail route then, three hundred miles of dirt track and tin mailboxes, and I had a rule about not stopping for anything that wasn't on the manifest.

I stopped for it anyway. It stood in a coffee can on the wrong side of a fence, one green column with a single arm raised as if hailing a bus. Nobody had watered it since spring. I put it on the passenger seat with a towel under the pot, and it rode with me all summer, through the wash crossings and past the dead Ford at Ocotillo Flats, the arm climbing a little higher each time I checked on it.
By August the arm had reached the sun visor and stopped there. Dolores said that was what they did when they were content. I didn't believe her, but I stopped trying to get it to sit straight.
The last box on the route belonged to a Mrs Aurelia Ruiz, who had buried a husband and a dog within a year and still left a dented tin cup of water out for the roadrunners. I set the pot beside it on the Friday, in the shade, and wrote nothing on the manifest. When I came back the following Tuesday there was a second arm, short and stubby, pointing back down the road the way I had come, as if it had decided I would need to find my own way again.
