Forest and birds fade on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A four-panel collage showing the same forearm tattoo from different angles. A dark forest of bare trees and a pine rises up the arm, with small birds in flight above, and the ink softens into fine speckled dots toward the wrist. The shading is solid black with soft grey tones against a dark background.

On the eastern side the plantation ran dark and straight, pine after pine, planted by people who had wanted timber and nothing else. On the western side the birches had been left to grow wild and bare, their branches thin as handwriting. Between them stood the fence, and in the last hour the finches came down over it in loose, ragged lines, crossing the border as if it were only weather.

Their mother had taught them both the names of the trees, and Vera had always said the pines looked like people waiting for a bus. He wrote that in a postcard he could not send, then fed it to the stove on the nights the wind came from the west.
On the last evening before the new crossing rules came in, he kept the ledger open and waited. The birds came over in a thin dark stitch, thinning toward the fence posts until only a few specks were left, too small to be sure of. He wrote the number down, then looked at the empty column beside it and left it blank, the way you might leave a gate unlatched for someone who had not yet arrived.
