Forest scene on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four views of the same forearm show a woodland scene with bare branched trees, a pine, a large moon and small birds in flight. The shading is soft and smoky in the sky and clouds, with fine linework on the branches and a stippled dotwork fade at the lower edge. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the trees and moon are arranged to wrap around the arm.

The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the road over Harrow Pass was a white ribbon nobody would drive. Mrs Doyle gave me the room above the taproom because it was the only one with a fire that drew. I hung my wet coat on the hook, went to the window, and saw the moon sitting low over the larches, pale and fat, with a scatter of starlings sliding across its face like pencil strokes.

Downstairs, the panel above the hearth had been painted by somebody's grandfather long before anyone living could remember him. Grey wash and nothing brighter: a tall pine in the middle, bare birches combing the sky, clouds banked like old wool, and at the bottom the dark wood dissolving into a fine dust of dots, as if the forest had simply given up at the floor. Ewan, the landlady's son, caught me staring while he fed the grate. He had a face like a shut door and few words, but he said the painter had come up in a storm exactly like this one, asked for a bed, and left the panel behind when he walked out in April.

"Every winter the birds get counted," Ewan said. "Old Mrs Doyle does it on the night the snow stops."

"How many are there?"

"Depends who's counting."

I counted them myself that night, lying awake with the fire ticking down, and got eleven, scattered across the moon like dropped ash. In the morning the ploughs came grinding up from the valley, the sky cleared to a hard blue, and I went down early to find the panel. There were twelve birds now, one of them tucked low near the pine as if it had only just landed. On the bottom stair lay a single wet black feather, and I left it where it was.
