The brothers at Saint Oswin's had a rule about the pine wood below the house: no one went past the third row of trunks after vespers, and no one spoke of what they had seen there. Brother Tobias broke it the winter the snow came off the mountain early and mist lay in the valley like wool in a basket. He went down with a lantern and a sack of barley bread, because the old cellarer said the hungry things came closer when the cold did.

The tall grey one waited for him at the edge of the clearing. It did not come nearer, and it did not run. Tobias set the bread on a stump and stepped back, and the creature crouched and broke a loaf between its hands as carefully as a man breaking a seal. Beyond it a hind stood with her head lifted, her breath smoking, watching the lantern as though she were counting its flame. Overhead, two ravens crossed from one peak to the other without a sound.

When he climbed back, the abbot asked what he had given. Tobias said bread, and the abbot nodded and wrote a line in the book of the house. Years later the novice who kept that book found a note in the margin of the winter pages, in an unsteady hand.

The wood keeps its own accounts, it read, and we are only ever owed the bread.
