Pine forest forearm tattoo
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a dense forest of tall pine trees in silhouette, with the tallest trees on the right and paler, fading trees behind them. The linework is soft and shaded, creating depth and a hazy atmosphere, and the ground at the bottom of the design fades into the skin. The ink is black and grey, and the composition wraps around the forearm with the tree line rising from the wrist side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit yourself down by the stove, and mind the cat, for she's been waiting on this one all evening. You'll have seen the pines on the hill above Skerrin, the tall black ones that stand up out of the mist like men who've forgotten why they came. My grandmother's father planted the first of them, though the fleet had been going out past the headland for a hundred years before that.

The story goes that in the winter of the great herring failure, the boats of Skerrin went out one morning into a fog so thick a man could not see his own bow. Old Ailsa Morrow, who kept the lamp at the point, built a fire of green pine branches on the rocks, because resin burns with a black smoke that climbs high and does not thin. The boats came home by it, one after another, following that dark column up from the water like a line drawn on the sky.
Her son was not among them. He was the youngest, Tam, and he had taken the second boat out on a bet about a sack of meal. Every evening she fed the fire. When the fog lifted on the ninth day, the tallest trees on the hill were standing exactly where the smoke had been, and nobody could say who had planted them, for there had been no pines on that shore since the Norse left. The people of Skerrin still say the trees grow taller on the side that faces the sea.
So when you see the mist lying on that hill, don't call it weather. Look for the tall one at the edge, and the paler one behind it, and you'll understand the trees are only keeping watch, with the fire still burning somewhere under them.
