Pine forest and birds on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a row of dark pine tree silhouettes and bare trunks above a dotwork fade of stippled dots at the base, with small birds scattered across the upper area. The solid black fills contrast with the fine dots and the lighter skin, and the three photographs show the design from different angles along the leg.

Her brother Tom was out on the track with a lantern, calling that the swallows were roosting early and it would rain by morning. Nell didn't care about the rain. She cared that Owen Pryce had asked her to dance three times and then gone quiet each time the talk turned to the timber contract and the mill at the bottom of the valley.

Birds began lifting from the stubble at the edge of the clearing, a ragged scatter going up over the treetops. They wheeled once, twice, then dropped into the dark wood as if someone had called them home. Owen came out with his hat in his hands. He said nothing about the mill. He only held out his palm, and in it lay a fistful of pine needles and one dark feather.

They stepped back into the hall together, and behind them the birds settled one by one into the trees, each finding its own branch in the frost.
